Starting Out

Starting Out

Model aircraft flying is bloody fun and a rewarding past time. Millions of people around the world already know this and head out to their local model field at every possible opportunity, cruising the skies and shooting the breeze with like minded friends. It's a hobby with no boundaries where a person of any age, any gender and any background can quickly get into and be part of the aeromodelling community. We welcome all newcomers with open arms, we are a relaxed and peaceful site, and invite those of you who are interested in starting out to read the following valuable information. It's been sourced from flyers who have been in the air for decades and will help you to get a good start, possibly saving you alot of time and $$$!

Learning to fly is where it all starts out, and with aeromodelling as with most things you have a couple of options. The first thing you will have to decide on is what you are going to fly. If you are looking for a plane you will need a decent kit to start out with but it doesn't have to be expensive or intimidating to put together. It should be robust enough to help you learn the art of flying without disintegrating at the inevitable crashes that it will endure while you are improving you skills. There are always a good number "trainer" planes on the market, some planes come as ready to fly kits and can be purchased with almost everything you will need to get in the sky, and our club members may have a couple of ideas as to which kits you should consider so please feel free to use our contact us page to ask for some suggestions. Keep in mind that it's almost a certainty that your pride and joy will find itself plumetting into the earth on occasion, leaving you with a couple of damaged items, so select a kit where spare parts are readily available. We invite you to visit our field while practicing as it's the fastest, safest and best environment to learn in, plus you can ask our members for some of the valuable tip's and trick's we have learnt over the decades.

Our site also has a handful of instructors who you can use to help you advance your skills quickly and more importantly, effectively. Plus, under certain circumstances a club trainer plane may also be available to learn with, but you must of course pre-arrange with the club should you require the services of an instructor and/or a trainer plane. Use the contact us page to let us know your needs.

If you can't wait to get into the air, make sure it's a day when there is little or no wind then grab your plane and head to a field!

Most importantly, keep up the practice, fly as often as you can and before too long it will be second nature for you to guide your aircraft through the blue. As you become more competent in the skies and your skills advance you will be able to upgrade and customise your aircraft to something more your style.
